Hall STEM Academy Cold Weather Recess Policy

At Hall STEM Academy, we believe outdoor play is essential for students’ well-being. Fresh air, movement, and unstructured play support focus, emotional regulation, and readiness to learn, especially during long Minnesota winters. To keep students safe while also ensuring they benefit from outdoor activity, we follow the cold-weather guidelines below.

Minneapolis Public Schools Winter Weather Guidance

Recess Temperature Guidelines

We use National Weather Service data for Minneapolis (temperature + wind chill) to make decisions each day.

Outdoor Recess

Students go outside when:

  • Air temperature is 0°F or warmer, and

  • Wind chill is above 0°F

Students must wear winter-appropriate clothing to participate safely.

Staff will monitor students closely, watch for exposed skin, and adjust time as needed.

Indoor Recess

Recess is held indoors when:

  • Air temperature is below 0°F, or

  • Wind chill is 0°F or colder

This aligns with common practice across Minnesota districts and pediatric safety guidance regarding frostbite risk.

Clothing Expectations

For outdoor recess during winter months, students should arrive with:

  • Winter jacket

  • Snow pants

  • Boots

  • Hat

  • Mittens/gloves

  • Scarf or face covering (optional but encouraged)

If your child needs any item, please reach out. We are happy to help connect families to organizations, community partners and resources.

Students With Medical Needs

If a child has a health condition that limits cold-weather participation, families may submit a medical provider’s note outlining necessary accommodations. The school nurse and administrative team will support an individualized plan.

Principal/Designee Discretion

Recess decisions may be adjusted at any time due to:

  • Sudden temperature drops

  • Extreme wind or blowing snow

  • Ice or unsafe playground conditions

The goal is always to balance safety and outdoor play.
